Ibiza has announced a historic step in regulating short-term rentals. Thanks to advanced tourism intelligence tools, the island’s government managed to identify and remove over 14,500 illegal beds that were being offered on platforms such as Airbnb.
The Taskforce Project
This initiative was carried out through the Illegal Short-Term Rentals Taskforce of Ibiza, in close collaboration with Airbnb and the tourism intelligence company Mabrian.
- Total Removal: 2,831 short-term rental listings, corresponding to 14,532 illegal beds, were taken off the market.
- Technological Support: With Mabrian’s support, an advanced analytical model was created to detect unlicensed listings, comparing data with official tourism business registries.
- Airbnb Cooperation: The platform actively collaborated, committing to remove all unregistered listings across the Balearic Islands by October.
- Objective: To protect the legal tourism supply, improve the visitor experience, and relieve residents from the effects of overtourism.
Statements & Outlook
The president of the Ibiza Council, Vicent Marí, highlighted that this is the first region in Spain to have fully eliminated illegal listings from Airbnb, stressing that decisions are now based on data rather than subjective perceptions.
Meanwhile, the president of the Balearic Islands, Margarita Prohens, emphasized that this model will soon be applied across the rest of the islands.
Conclusion
Ibiza’s success demonstrates how the use of technology and cooperation between local authorities and international platforms can lead to a more qualitative and regulated tourism model, benefiting both visitors and residents.
